Increase max IE7 downloads

{ Posted on 23.35 by Faruq Blog }
Internet Explorer 7 only allows you to download two files from the same server at a time. This is not a software limit but rather a limit imposed based on the web standard. Since this is simply a software setting, it can be modified and you can increase the limit to something much high such as 10. Follow the steps below to increase your max downloads from the same server:
  1. Click on the Start Button and type in Regedit.
  2. When Registry Editor loads navigate through HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion and Internet Settings.
  3. Right click on MaxConnectionsPerServer and select Modify. Set the decimal value to something greater than 2.
  4. Right click on MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server and select Modify. Set the decimal value to something greater than 2.
  5. Reboot.

Stop User Account Control (UAC) screen flicker / flash

{ Posted on 23.28 by Faruq Blog }
Every time I get one of those UAC prompts asking me to authorize an administrative action my LCD screen flashes when the box pops up. This is caused by the switch to the secure desktop, similar to what happens when you hit CTRL + ALT + DELETE. The only difference is that the background is a snapshot of your desktop that gives it the effect that it is just a pop up window. Although if you look carefully you will notice it is static since the clock does not change and anything else that was animated is now static. The secure desktop provides an extra level of security to UAC by making it immune to any application that may try to automate the click on the allow button bypassing the purpose of UAC.

This sounds like a great thing but it is really annoying to me. I hate that screen flicker. Rather than disable UAC, there is a better alternative. Instead, I can just disable the secure desktop switch that causes the flicker. I know this is not as secure but it is better than disabling UAC completely.

Follow the steps below to disable UAC secure desktop:
  1. Click on the Start Button and key in secpol.msc and hit Enter.
  2. Navigate through Local Policies and Security Options.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and right click on "User Account Control: Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation" and select Properties.
  4. Set the option to Disabled and hit OK.

Enhance SATA disk performance

{ Posted on 20.24 by Faruq Blog }
Do you have a SATA disk drive in your computer? If so, you can squeeze a little more performance out of your hard disk. This speeds up the performance of your hard disk by enhancing write caching. However, if your computer is not connected to a battery backup and you loose power you have a increased risk for data loss or corruption. If you have a laptop your chances are data loss or corruption are dramatically less since your laptop battery will kick on if your power source is lost. Let's get started:

  1. Click on the Start Button and key in Device Manager and hit Enter.
  2. Expand Disk Drives.
  3. Right click on your hard drive and select Properties.
  4. On the Policies tab, check Enable advanced performance.
  5. Hit OK and close Device Manager.

Speed up web browsing with OpenDNS

{ Posted on 17.56 by Faruq Blog }
When you type in a domain name such as wingeek.com in your browser the computer must resolve the friendly name into an IP address of the server to download the web page and supporting files. Windows uses a DNS (domain name system) server to lookup this information. By default, Windows uses your ISP’s DNS server. Depending on your provider, the performance of their DNS resolving server varies. Some large national providers are known to provide unreliable and slow DNS servers.

The performance of the DNS server you are using is one component that affects the speed of your internet browsing. Since each domain name you type in must be resolved into an IP address, the amount of time that takes will delay the loading of any web page. Some users with overloaded ISP DNS servers can see delays in multiple seconds before web pages start to load.

OpenDNS provides free alternative DNS servers that anyone can use with any internet provider. Unlike many national internet providers, OpenDNS’s DNS servers are very fast and reliable. Using OpenDNS servers instead of your ISP servers will help you speed up your internet browsing by cutting down on the delay between resolving a domain name and getting the IP address so your browser can start loading the web page.

Configuring your computer to use OpenDNS servers instead of your ISP’s is a simple change that works in both Windows XP and Windows Vista:
  1. Click on the Start Button and type in ncpa.cpl and hit Enter. In Windows XP Click on the Start Button, click Run and then type in ncpa.cpl
  2. Right click on your active network connection that you use to connect to the Internet and select Properties.
  3. On the Networking / General tab, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) (version 4 on Windows Vista & 7) and hit Properties.
  4. On the properties screen, select Use the following DNS server addresses and then type in 208.67.222.222 in the preferred and 208.67.220.220 in the alternate boxes.
  5. Hit OK twice and you are finished.

Speed up wireless WAN connections

{ Posted on 17.47 by Faruq Blog }
In Windows Vista the networking components were designed to be much more intelligent and automatically adjust the network settings to optimize the connection speed. This is a great new feature. Your network components basically tweak themselves for optimal performance. In most situations, these components automatically adjust perfectly for best performance. However, with wireless WAN cards the detection of network conditions is flawed and can result in slower network performance.

To fix this problem, Microsoft has released a hotfix for users affected by this issue. If you have a Wireless WAN device, I suggest you give this hotfix a try.

KB 940646 details:

This problem occurs because of the way that TCP receive window auto tuning is used in Windows Vista for connections that only receive data.

Windows Vista obtains a round-trip time (RTT) estimate at the time of connection setup and every time that a new segment of data that is transmitted. A connection that only receives data is limited to the single RTT sample that is obtained at the time of connection setup. Because the connection only receives data, the connection cannot "converge" to the actual RTT of the connection. For example, because the RTT data may fluctuate for various reasons, a "converge" operation is performed to estimate a meaningful RTT by using blending current and previous RTT data. However, if the connection cannot converge to the actual RTT of the connection, the bandwidth delay product (BDP) estimate that Vista obtains is also incorrect. Therefore, the connection's receive window is limited, and throughput of the connected transmission network is reduced.

So Microsoft’s Sinofsky had a pretty good dance with CNET about Windows 7, really not saying much of anything. But a picture’s worth a thousand words, right? Howzabout a ton of pics?

We can confirm these are indeed screen shots of the current build of Windows 7 as it will be introduced in 2010, but keep in mind that’s three years away and many changes might be made. We’re hoping it’s better than Vista.

Here some screenshots of windows 7.

How to Fix a Slow Computer - 10 Quick Steps

{ Posted on 23.19 by Faruq Blog }
Does your computer seem slow, unresponsive or out of date only a few months after your purchased it? You need to do everything that you can to prolong the lifecycle of your computer and to fix a slow computer.

Here are 10 quick steps you can take to help fix your slow computer and make it run like new again.

1. Optimize Display Settings.
By removing some of the unnecessary visual options on your computer you can help fix your slow computer and improve the performance.

Go to the Control Panel
Click System
Click Advanced tab
In the Performance tab click Settings
There are a range of options you can remove here. I would suggest you only retain the following as ticked:
(1) Show shadows under menus
(2) Show shadows under mouse pointer
(3) Show translucent selection rectangle
(4) Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
(5) Use visual styles on windows and buttons
You can play around with these settings, as these will not affect the stability of your computer.

2. Disable File Indexing.
File Indexing is a service that uses a huge amount of your computers RAM. By disabling this your system can immediately become faster and more responsive. How do you do this?

a. Double Click the My Computer icon
b. Right click the c: drive and hit properties
c. Uncheck “allow indexing service to index this disk for fast file searching” Apply this change to C: subfolders and files and click OK.

3. Remove Your Desktop Picture.
It may be nice to have a pretty picture on your desktop background. However, did you know that this pictures uses a huge amount of memory and can slow your computer performance. If you remove the image this can improve the speed of your computer.

4. Scan Your Computer Registry.
RegCure™ is one of the top rated Registry Cleaners available in the market. One of the best ways to improve the speed of your computer is to clean your computer registry with an effective registry cleaner.
Visit www.fixaslowcomputer.com for a free scan to see if your registry requires attention.

5. Empty the prefetch folder.

‘Prefetching’ is when Windows XP pre-loads portions of data and applications that are frequently loaded. While this has the benefit of allowing programs to appear and start quickly… after a while it can end up a burden on your computer as XP wastes time pre-loading obsolete data. By regularly emptying your prefetch folder you can gain some improvements in system performance.

How do you do this?
The prefetch folder resides on your local hard disk, under the Windows folder.
%systemroot%\prefetch
-or-
X:\windows\prefetch

Where X is the drive letter where you have Windows installed. Either path will get you to your local system. The second path is for those who have the default installation on the most commonly used drive letter, C:\

6. Reduce the number of fonts.
Extra fonts on your computer do use up a lot of your systems power! TrueType Fonts in particular are a drain on computer resources. So how can you get rid of some of these fonts?
Open Control Panel
Open Fonts folder
Move fonts you do not require to a temp directory so you can reinstall them later if required.
Anything over 300 fonts is probably excessive and can really slow your computer.

7. Improve folder browsing.
You can improve your folder browsing so that a single Windows Explorer window does not take the rest of your operating system down you can launch separate folder windows in multi processes. Click on My Computer, tools, then Folder Options. Click on the View tab. Scroll down to "Launch folder windows in a separate process," and enable this option.
Step 2. Stop Windows XP automatically searching for network files and printers everytime you open windows explorer.
1) Open My Computer
2) Click on Tools menu
3) Click on Folder Options
4) Click on the View tab.
5) Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
6) Click Apply
7) Click Ok
8) Reboot your computer

8. Disable Performance Counters. Windows XP has a performance monitor utility which monitors several areas of your PC's performance. These utilities take up system resources so disabling is a good idea. To disable:

1) download and install the Extensible Performance Counter List
2) Then select each counter in turn in the 'Extensible performance counters' window and clear the 'performance counters enabled' checkbox at the bottom button below

9. Disconnect USB Devices not in use.
Printers, Scanners, Cameras and hard drives that connect to your computer can slow your system when Windows boots. This is because Windows will load all the drivers for the devices connected to your computer. If you are not using these items regularly disconnect them. You can plug them back in when you need them and Windows will only load the drivers it needs at any time.

10. Scan for Spyware or Viruses.
Unfortunately, whenever you use your computer to access the internet you are at risk from Spyware and Viruses. If you computer becomes infected it will significantly slow your computer, not to mention making it vulnerable to crashing, corruption of data and ultimate failure. You need to ensure that your computer is protected from viruses and spyware. Visit www.strowan.com for details on the most popular anti virus or spyware products on the market today. How to avoid scams and phishing when selling online

{ Posted on 23.11 by Faruq Blog }
According to Wikipedia, "In computing, phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication."
Here yopu will find a few suggestions how to avoid it.

Step1
Be careful.
When in doubt about potential buyer's identity, avoid doing business with them.

Step2
Never send your product before the payment clears your bank. This should be your rule number one. Surprisingly many people do the opposite. Please remember that it is an absolutely normal practice - first the payment comes, then the shipment leaves. Of course, there could be some exceptions, when you deal with long-time and trusted customers, but still keep your eyes open.

Step3
Never agree to return the overpayment.
There are cases when the buyer sends more funds than needed, and instructs the seller to send overpayment back. Never agree to this.

Step4
Be cautious with emails - some of them may camouflage as a real legitimate business.
Though some emails may look real (contain real links, such as PayPal.com for example), the real link behind it may be completely different and point to the illegal domain.

Step5
Never click on suspicious links. See the reasons above in steps 4.

Step6
Never perform online transactions using unknown service provider. Sign up only for well-known providers, such as PayPal for example.

Step7
Protect your computer from viruses. Install popular antivirus programs, such as trend Micro, for example, which will be updated continuously and will be able to protect you from most viruses. There is a lot viruses out there, which can steal your electronic identity.

Step8
Use spam filters in your email software. Sometimes the legitimate email may be stopped by the filter, so check the spam email folder frequently.

Are you tired of trying to manage dozens of passwords? Use this program to create passwords you will never forget.

Step1
Most of us have to manage dozens of passwords for our computers. Email, web sites, bank account logins, etc. There are so many sites and applications that require passwords and it seems they all expire at different times. This can be very difficult to manage. MacBook Air: Not the thinnest notebook ever

{ Posted on 09.30 by Faruq Blog }
Tags :
The MacBook Air, unfurled today, might be the thinnest notebook on the market today, but it's not the thinnest of all time.

That distinction belongs to the Pedion, an ill-fated notebook developed by Mitsubishi and Hewlett-Packard back in 1997.The Pedion measured 18.4 millimeters thick, which comes out to 0.7244 inch thick. Although the Air gets to 0.16 inch at the thinnest point, the Air is 0.76 inch thick at the beefiest portion, making it minutely thicker. Mitsubishi released the Pedion in early 1998.
The Pedion, however, wasn't exactly the paragon of quality or value. The $6,000 notebook came with 64MB of memory and a 1GB hard drive. The notebook came with a magnesium case to make it sturdy. Even with that, though, consumers quickly reported mechanical and other problems. Mitsubishi subsequently withdrew the notebook from the market. (HP never came out with its version, I don't think. I'll check.) The name probably didn't help either. "Attention Circuit City employees. I have a Pedion on aisle one."

Apple calls the Air the world's thinnest notebook. How you interpret that ("on the market today" or "ever") is up to you.

Others have come close but not limboed under. A special-edition Sony Vaio X505 sold back in 2004 comes close to the Air. The notebook, issued in limited numbers to commemorate the Vaio line, measured 0.8 inch thick at the fattest point and 0.38 inch at the thinnest. Part of the shell was made of carbon fiber for strength.

Sony's thinnest notebook now, meanwhile, measures 1.2 inches thick at the fattest point and 0.8 inch thick at the thinnest point. (If you asked me in college if I'd be arguing notebook thinness as a grown up, I would have laughed.)

Although the Pedion died a quick, ugly death, some of the ideas behind it linger on, and one of those ideas is the thin notebook with a medium-size screen. Back then, most mini-notebooks came with small screens and keyboards. The Pedion had a 12-inch screen, big for the time, and a relatively normal-size keyboard. In other words, it had normal X and Y dimensions, but a small Z. The formula has been popular ever since.

Although notebook makers have for the past few years focused quite a bit of attention on notebooks with 15-inch and larger screens, the new battleground will be in the 11-inch and 13-inch screen arena, predicted Xavier Lauwaert, a Vaio product manager. These notebooks are roughly similar to dimensions of the old Mitsubishi model.

Dell recently put out a light notebook with a 13-inch screen, while Sony showed off 11-inch and 13-inch models at CES. The Air fits in the same category.

"There will be a war around thinness, battery life, and price/performance. You can see this is where everyone is going," Lauwaert said. In these notebooks, optical drives become an option.

Manufacturers will also have to explore chemistry labs as well to find new materials similar to carbon fiber that can be fashioned into thin chassis.

Windows Dreamscene

Windows DreamScene (codename Motion Desktop, later changed to Borealis) is a animated wallpapers and video technology that enable Windows Vista Ultimate users to use and run high-resolution and high-definition video contents as their desktop background as part of the Windows Vista Aero Glass user interface. In short, instead of selecting static photo or picture image as your desktop background, you can now select video or or motion picture as your come-to-live desktop background with DreamScene.

The main advantage of Windows DreamScene is that the feature will not be using significant amounts of CPU, due to its utilization of the hardware accelerated Desktop Windows Manager (DWM), as shown in demonstration during CES. All processing, animation and video playback are done on video graphics card, and basically the decoding of the video is the only real CPU use involved. Beside, Windows DreamScene is also smart enough to scan your battery power settings and pauses the video to conserve battery power.

As mentioned above, Windows DreamScene supports user generated contents, videos, animated pictures, tools and enhancements. Once Vista is generally available, it’s believe that you will be able to find a lot of websites and repositories hosting and distributing huge gallery of contents for DreamScene, such as at Dream.WinCustomize.com. It’s also possible to download video clips from video sharing sites such as Youtube, Google Video, Metacafe, iFilm, DailyMotion and etc, convert the video to DreamScene supported format and set the video as wallpaper, albeit the video will be of low quality.
